Shocking statement to BBC: Canadian minister proposes new European alliance to Britain
RH
Canada's finance minister François-Philippe Champagne has declared it is urgently important for Britain to join the large-scale economic union planned between Canada and the European Union. Stressing that the world has already shifted onto a different course amid the global customs tariffs imposed by the United States and changing geostrategic conditions, the minister noted that Ottawa has resolutely protected its national industry and workers by taking adequate steps in the trade confrontation.
"Postxronika.az" reports, citing Reuters, that this strategic call followed an unprecedented proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to open the door to associate EU membership for Canada. Champagne, saying Britain and Canada share entirely the same geopolitical values, stressed that both states must join forces to build the economic alliance of the future while retaining their own independent sovereignty.
High-level meetings held in Strasbourg between former Bank of England governor Mark Carney and EU officials were also aimed precisely at forming a bloc of "middle powers" in the areas of economic growth, resilience and security. Despite having renewed its trade deal with Washington in the post-Brexit era, London's future position in the Euro-Atlantic space amid this new Canada-EU rapprochement has sparked wide debate among international analysts.
