The 11th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation was held in Sighnaghi, Georgia, chaired by the prime ministers of the two countries. The agenda focused on developing strategic partnership, expanding trade and economic ties, and strengthening cooperation in the agricultural sector. As part of the meeting, two Memorandums of Understanding were signed between Azerbaijan’s Food Safety Agency and Georgia’s National Food Agency on plant protection and in the veterinary field.
Postxronika.az AQTA reports that the documents envisage the management of phytosanitary risks and the prevention of infectious animal diseases. The agreements will ensure the mutual recognition of veterinary and phytosanitary certificates, as well as the improvement of transit procedures for agricultural cargo. The meeting also highlighted that the equivalence system introduced from 2025 contributes to the expansion of bilateral trade relations.
Updating the regulatory framework on food safety among neighboring countries significantly accelerates the turnover of agricultural products. Harmonizing veterinary and phytosanitary control helps prevent delays at border crossing points and facilitates an increase in trade volumes. The joint steps taken by the two partner countries in this direction serve to reliably ensure regional food security.
